Practice : Curious?

What makes you curious about the history of acting, theatre and musicals?  Anything you've always wanted to know about?  Do you know something that you'd like to share.

(DA RULES: Try both "posting" and "commenting" to get the hang of both. I will expect to see at least one of each. Check out "Post Options" and allow reader comments please.)

  1. I've always been curious about the origination of theatre in cultures besides Greece, so in places like China and India.

  2. I'm very interested in Japanese Kabuki theatre. I have learned a little bit about it in a previous class that I have taken, but would be interested to view it, if possible, from a musical standpoint. This is to say, was music even a part of Kabuki, and if so in what way?

  3. I'm excited for everything! I think it's important for us to know where we came from to be able to fully understand where we are now in the art form of musical theatre. I also know very little about musical theatre history, so I'm excited to learn about as many aspects as I can!

Let's see... Do I know anything of interest? I think I remember hearing in high school that Grecian theatre masks are extremely over-the-top to fill the large theatres and distinguish between different characters so actors could play many different people.

    1. Good to see a photo of you Paige. Yes, masks were important in those big outdoor theatres. They also helped the audience understand who the characters were because there were only three actors plus the chorus.

  5. I'm just excited to be learning more about how musical theatre and theatre as a whole have developed into what we generally recognize it to be today; Understanding the roots and the evolution of theatre thus far might give us a glimpse of the future. I'm very excited to be looking at how the past relates to, and influences the present, like the original spring awakening play and the new musical.

  6. I have been looking forward to learning about theatre history for a while now. I agree with Paige, in that it is crucial for us to have an understanding of where we came from. Just like in world history, there tends to be repetition.

I don't believe I know very much about the history but I have a feeling that I will surprise myself as the course progresses. I have been to Greece and Italy and seen some of the theatres there. That is all I can think of at this current moment.

  7. I am particularly interested in learning about the different theatrical styles. I enjoy how they all tend to influence each other but all are completely different. I think it is important to know what defines these different styles as they can be drawn upon to help create a concept for a show/scene/etc. I am also excited to observe the progression of theatre from what the Greeks saw to what we see today. Though very similar, there are changes that have been made along the way.

  8. I'm not very well-versed in theatre history, but I like theatre, and I like history. I want to know everything I can learn. I crave knowledge as a sponge craves water, assuming sponges crave. I'm also interested in learning about mime. It seems like one of those skills that could be very useful some day. By the way, it's Henry. I don't know how to set my name when I comment, but I'll figure it out!
