A Feature Film

Yes it's true, there was, in fact a film entitled Bunraku. It featured Josh Hartnett, Demi Moore, and Woody Harrelson, amoung others, and was released in 2010.

Aside from the title, it had absolutely nothing to do with Japanese Bunraku theatre, though it did take a lot of its inspiration from Japanese Shadow Plays. Basically, they named it Bunraku because it sounds cool and because it takes place in Japan.

But that is beside the point. The point is: Bunraku theatre is fascinating. Has anyone ever seen such convincing puppetry outside of this art form? I didn't think so. In general, I find puppetry rather creepy, but this style has the ability to be moving, funny, and strangely realistic. Don't knock it till you try it!
